217. Continental Drifter by: Kathy MacLeod

Netgalley Arc! Comes out in April 2024!

This is such a good story! I love graphic novels and stories of how people live. We see Katy, who lives in Thailand and comes to America with her family each summer to visit her dad’s side of the family. She even gets to go to sleep away summer camp. She has all these thoughts and feelings on how everything will go and writes about them in her journal. This would be wonderful for a middle school classroom or home library.

216. Plain Jane and the Mermaid by: Vera Brosgol

Netgally arc

This is the cutest graphic novel. This would be great for a middle school classroom library. There are so many different old stories that come to life in this book. An ugly girl, a girl that loses her parents and her home, and a boy from town that has eyes for a mermaid that wants to eat him to stay pretty. Jane throughout finds who she really is and begins to stand up for herself. The illustrations are wonderful and make you feel like you are underwater with her. I highly recommend this book!

215. The First Four Year by: Laura Ingalls Wilder

Borrowed from library

This was the last book in the series. Laura has married Almonzo, and it’s the first year of their marriage. They have a daughter named Rose. They work out how they will live while owing for their home and wheat. They buy sheep that help pay all of the bills. Laura loves Rose, and they are outside much of the time. Right in the end, there is a fire that burns down their house. That just makes it so they move in with Ma and Pa and help them with everything.

214. These Happy Golden Years by: Laura Ingalls Wilder

Borrowed from library

How can so much happen in one book? Laura is asked to be a short-term teacher. The place she stayed at for 3 months was horrible. The wife hated her being there. While there, a friend Almonzo began to pick her up on weekends so she could be at home. After that, she went back to school to earn a degree. Almonzo would pick Laura up for drives. He also had to go back home for a time and surprised her at Christmas. One 5 asked her to marry him. They had a small wedding and the end was them moving into their new house. I really enjoyed this one!

213. By the Shores of Silver Lake by: Laura Ingalls Wilder

Borrowed from library

This one was a good one to read on the line of reading all of the books.

Pa wants to change where they are living once again. Pa puts a home in the middle of the town. The only thing that I didn’t like was that people would be coming to the town and wouldn’t have anywhere to stay! At first, someone that they knew came to stay overnight. But then each night, a wagon full of men would knock on their door to have a place to keep out of the cold. They would stay by the stove, and the girls would be upstairs by themselves. Laura figures out a great thing to have the people leave money in order to help with all of the food that people eat. I couldn’t imagine sitting down for dinner and then hearing a wagon or two, and Ma had to try to come up with extra food.
They do use this money in order to go to where they will be living.

212. On the Banks of Plum Creek by: Laura Ingalls Wilder

Borrowed at the library

This one was good like the others that I have read. A big storm comes in, and Pa must go into town. Ma has to do the chores while the girls stay inside, waiting for her. The only thing that was different was how Laura got in trouble a lot. I don’t know if it was her age, but she kept on doing things that she knew that she wasn’t allowed or able to do. A couple of times, she could have gotten really hurt.

210. The Long Winter by: Laura Ingalls Wilder

Borrowed from Library

You could feel the cold and wind while reading this book. The family thought that it was a two day blizzard. Then snow came again. Then it was months that it wouldn’t let up. This is more about how Pa and other men of the town saved everyone by bringing in wheat for them to heat their homes and eat.

209. Her Heart’s Desire by: Shelley Shepard Gray

Borrowed from library

This is such a good book!!! Mary-Margaret has left her hometown for a warmer place in Florida. When she meets 2 new friends on the bus, she also has to come in contact with her enemy from back home. Mary and her new friends stay at a local B and B. Mary also meets and begins to like a boy. Once she finds out his secret, it turns the story Topsy turvy. Will Mary become friends with her sworn enemy, and what will happen to her new love when they eventually come back together? I’ve read a lot of Amish books, but this has been by far one of my favorites.
