111. The Fault In Our Stars by: John Green

Book Bought: REREAD: Annotated

Reread all on one evening. Second time doing an annotation with a book. Let me know if you want a favorite book annotated by me! I used Green Highlight throughout the book.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

Recommendation: Yes. Going in, you know that it will be a heartbreaker. You are heartbroken throughout. You feel for all of the characters. One thing I love is that the main character, Hazel, loves books. She is constantly reading and using her knowledge in the way that she speaks. She has a favorite author, just like me. I really think I enjoyed the book so much more than the movie.

109. Unnecessary Drama By: Nina Kenwood

Netgally Arc: Audio

Synopsis:

Eighteen-year-old Brooke is the kind of friend who not only remembers everyone’s birthdays, but also organizes the group present, pays for it, and politely chases others for their share. She’s the helper, the doer, the maker-of spreadsheets. She’s the responsible one who always follows the rules―and she plans to keep it that way during her first year of college.

Her student housing only has one “no unnecessary drama.” Which means no fights, tension, or romance between roommates. When one of them turns out to be Jesse, her high-school nemesis, Brooke is determined she can handle it. They’ll simply silently endure living together and stay out of each other’s way. But it turns out Jesse isn’t so easy to ignore.

With Unnecessary Drama , Nina Kenwood perfectly captures the experience of leaving home for the first time, dealing with the unexpected complications of life, and somehow finding exactly what you need.

Recommend: Yes! This YA book was an easy read. You are rooting for Brooke to find herself, overcome her anxiety, and get to know herself and others.

In this series, exchanging letters that contain open and honest feelings and struggles helps Doretta and two of her best friends through the darkest challenges of their lives.

Recommend: Yes! This was such a good read! Even though it is the second in the series, I did not miss out on anything. When Doretta’s fiance is killed days before the wedding and she is also hurt, she must overcome her injuries and depression. Yes, there is a love triangle with the loss, but I loved how the author touched on depression and showed the different ways that Doretta found herself again.

105. Dear Pen Pal by: Heather Vogel Frederick

Book Borrowed from Library

Synopsis from GoodReads:

For the mother-daughter book club, everything changes in eighth grade.

Could the book club break up? When Jess is offered an anonymous scholarship to a prestigious boarding school, she’s not sure that leaving home — and her friends — is what she wants to do. Meanwhile Megan’s grandmother comes for a long visit and turns everything in the Wong household upside down; Emma crusades against her middle school’s new uniforms; and Cassidy fi nds out there’s a big change ahead for her family.

Inspired by Jess’s unexpected opportunity, the book club decides to read Jean Webster’s classic Daddy-Long-Legs , and there’s an added twist this year when they become pen pals with the girls in a book club in Wyoming. There’s plenty to write to their new friends about, from a prank-filled slumber party to a not-so-secret puppy — and even a surprise fi rst kiss.

In this third book in the beloved Mother-Daughter Book Club series, the girls learn that as long as they have one another — and a good book — they’re ready for whatever eighth grade has in store!

Recommendation: I read this book bc it had spoken about the book that I previously read. This is the first middle school/ya book that I finished, but I couldn’t really get into it. It had way too many characters to keep up with.

104. Daddy Long Legs by: Jean Webster

Borrowed from Libary

Synopsis from Goodreads: When Jerusha Abbott, an eighteen-year-old girl living in an orphan asylum, was told that a mysterious millionaire had agreed to pay for her education, it was like a dream come true. For the first time in her life, she had someone she could pretend was “family.” But everything was not perfect, for he chose to remain anonymous and asked that she only write him concerning her progress in school. Who was this mysterious gentleman, and would Jerusha ever meet him?

Recommendation: I can not believe that this book was written in 1912! I love books that are just letters to each other. In this case, it’s just a young girl writing to her benefactor. This book has allowed others to come along just like it.
