42. A Brief History of Time

42. A Brief History of Time By: Stephen Hawking

I really thought that I would not like this book. But, because I am a honest person, I checked this book out and got only a couple of pages in. I feel like you have to be as smart as Sheldon Cooper to understand any of this books. There are mathematical drawings and diagrams that I don’t remember learning in math class!! I also do not believe any of the “Worldly” beliefs that he has. He also is not a Christian and you can read it and feel it in the book. So, here is to another one that I did try, but had to put down rather quickly.

41. One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest

41. One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest By: Ken Kesey

I have never seen the movie or read the book. I have seen parts or maybe highlights of the movie. I could not read this in it’s entirety. One of my favorite books as a teenager was Girl, Interrupted. A true story that was depicted by Winona Ryder in the movie. It helped me see a depressive person and still living life.

I started the book above today and I just couldn’t do it. I was waiting for the hits. Or the medication. Or the electric shock being described. Or how nurses were treating the different kinds of patients.

And so, I will be honest and I looked up on YouTube the Spark notes of what happens in the book. Here it is below.

40. The Book Thief

40. The Book Thief By: Markus Zusak

I usually type something up, right after I finish a book. I finished this book I think two days ago. I read it a couple of years ago in my book club. I remember enjoying it, I mean if you can enjoy a German/Nazi time of war book. I remember getting close to the end this time and remembering. The narator goes from a small girl, to Death. Death walking around ending peoples lives. Oh, you don’t see it at first and come to understand him b/c he declares several times that he does not like his job.

Everyone should take the time to read this book. Not b/c of the hiding of a young Jewish man and what it looked like for him and each of the family members whose house he was hidden. The neighborhood and how it interacted with each other. Who came together and who stayed apart during different events. I can write about the different things that happened to the little girl in the story. Her upbringing, her stealing of books, and how much she just wanted to live and to learn.

There is also a movie for this book which I recently watched the movie preview. The book was hard to read through that I believe that the book would be as well.

Read this book! This is one that definitely needs to be read.

Extra Book 2: The Gift of Forgiveness

The Gift of Forgiveness by Katherine S. Pratt

Yes, I did at first get this book bc of who she is. Famous mom and dad and new husband is Chris Pratt. I also heard that this book was individual stories. But, I didnt know that they would be famous and people that I knew about.

It didn’t take me long to read it. I dont know which story I liked reading the best. Elizabeth Smart? The mom of one of the boys who did the Columbine killings? A women who went through Scientology and came out if it? A man who was abused in the Catholic Church? A model who was hurt bc of her weight?

Forgiveness. How each of them took the time. That it wasn’t a quick thing for most of them.

39. Cloud Atlas

39. Cloud Atlas By: David Mitchell

Okay, I am on a roll with books that I do not finish. I don’t know how many I am on, but I again could not get into this book. The husband had said that he had watched the movie. But, I don’t even think I could sit to finish that either. Here is the synopsis of the book/movie.

Synopsis:

This film/book follows the stories of six peoples “souls” across time, and their stories are interweaved as they advance, showing how all of them interact.

38. Lord of the Flies

38. Lord of the Flies By: William Golding

All I can think about is the part in Silver Linings Playbook where Jennifer Lawrence was going on and on about this book and how terrible it is. But, I was excited to read it. Well, this was yet another that I had to stop on page 100. It was good. Then I kind of figured that the longer the boys were on the island, something was going to happen. And it did. Boys trying to be men, making fires, killing pigs, and eventually going to far and killing each other. I did look up and read a quick 9 minute Sparknotes talk on what happened in the ending b/c I had to know, but I could not read it.

Here is the Sparknotes:

I know that I am not going to like all of the books. I haven’t before this read a book that I didn’t like in some way. I know that it is b/c I was choosing the books on things that I liked to read.

I was also talking to Daniel today about what I would do when I finished this 100. No, I told him. There isn’t another scratch off poster. All of the others pretty much have the same books except a couple on it. Well, when the time comes, I’ll get an idea and know what to do.

37. On The Road

37. On the Road By: Jack Kerouac

Okay, this is a book where I was excited to start it. I had heard of this book many times and people enjoyed it. But……I struggled through to get to page 100. I could not keep up with the people and all of the different places that they went. The characters and who was with who and not.

36. Grapes of Wrath

36. Grapes of Wrath By: John Steinbeck

This is one book that if anyone asked what’s a good book to read, I would say “Grapes of Wrath!!!” I read it only a couple of years ago, and I didn’t realize or know what I was missing! It may be the Amish literature that I love, the making of the bread and living off of the land. I also love the Oregon Trail and reading about people who had to move away and into an unknown place.

And so, I feel like this book is never slow. You think life is getting better, and then BAM!, the family is met with yet something else. A baby being born, being made to move, being made to move again, and how they can eat sparse and just live on nothing.

Everyone should read this book. How helping others and sharing can lead to your own families detriment.

I will say that the book just ends. What? Yes, it just ends on a regular day for the family and you don’t know what you will happen next.

Here is the synopsis:

The Joad clan, introduced to the world in John Steinbeck’s iconic novel, is looking for a better life in California. After their drought-ridden farm is seized by the bank, the family — led by just-paroled son Tom, — loads up a truck and heads West. On the road, beset by hardships, the Joads meet dozens of other families making the same trek and holding onto the same dream. Once in California, however, the Joads soon realize that the promised land isn’t quite what they hoped.

35. The Portrait of a Lady

The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James

This is another one that I tried. I got to at least 100 pages but had to stop. I saw on Goodreads that this books is loved by many people. It said that people love it like Pride and Prejudice. Again, I tried to read it and it just was boring. I just couldn’t get into it!

And so, there goes to another book that I did not finish.

There is a movie that was made. 1. Nicole Kidman looks so young. 2. The trailer does not make me want to read the book or see the movie.

34. Romeo and Juliet

34. Romeo and Juliet By: William Shakespeare

I remember reading this book in high school. I also remember that the Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes film came out in high school. For some reason, I read the book based on the movie, based on the play. And I would watch the movie a lot. Now, I don’t think I would.

Anyway, I feel like this is a book that everyone reads in high school. And I didn’t mind it at all. Two families torn so far apart. Even their children, falling in love won’t change it. Romeo and Juliet being so consumed with each other, they feel like they can not live in a world without each other. And so, Juliet taking a potion. Romeo finding her and believing she is dead and so he drink poison. When Juliet awakes, she cant believe that he is dead. And then kills herself. Both dies.
